What happens when the Opportunity Card expires or I find a job?

The Opportunity Card is a stepping stone, not a destination. When you find a qualified job or a qualification measure, you are expected to apply at the foreigners authority (Auslaenderbehoerde) for the proper residence permit that matches that employment, such as a work permit or EU Blue Card if eligible.

If your job meets the requirements for qualified employment but you are not yet eligible for any other residence title, the authorities can extend your stay through a follow-up Opportunity Card for up to two years. If you reach the end of the validity period without a qualifying job, the search permit will not simply roll over, so it is important to act before it expires.
