When sponsoring parents and grandparents, you sign an undertaking to financially support them for 20 years, starting from the day they become permanent residents. Quebec applies a shorter 10-year undertaking under its own rules.
During this period you are responsible for their basic needs, and if they receive certain social assistance, you may have to repay it. This long commitment is one reason the income requirement is strict and is assessed over three years rather than just one.
