A citizenship certificate is for people who are citizens but need an official document to prove it. This includes someone who has never held a certificate, someone who needs to update theirs, and someone replacing a certificate that was lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.
It is especially relevant for people born outside Canada to a Canadian parent, for whom a citizenship certificate is the standard proof of citizenship. If you already have valid proof and a current passport, you may not need to apply at all unless your document needs replacing or updating.
