Before entry you apply for a temporary authorisation to stay (response within a maximum of 4 months) with your passport, criminal record extract, CV, diplomas, employment contract and the ADEM certificate; after arrival you declare arrival within 3 days, have a medical exam, and apply for the residence permit within 3 months.
The process has two stages. From your country of origin you submit, on plain paper, an application for a temporary authorisation to stay to the Immigration Directorate, accompanied by a passport copy, a criminal record extract, your CV, diplomas, the signed employment contract and the ADEM certificate. The decision can take up to four months, and the authorisation, once granted, is valid for 90 days. If your nationality requires it, you then obtain a Type D visa.
After arriving in Luxembourg, you declare your arrival at the commune within three days, undergo the mandatory medical examination with TB screening, and lodge the residence permit application within three months, including your passport, the authorisation, the declaration of arrival, proof of housing and the EUR 80 fee. You also attend an appointment to give biometric data. Missing the 90-day or three-month windows is a frequent and avoidable problem.
