The single permit (jednolite zezwolenie na pobyt i prace) combines the right to live and work in Poland in one decision issued by the voivode. As a temporary residence permit, it is tied to the purpose of your stay rather than being open-ended.
The permit is granted for the time necessary to carry out that purpose, but never longer than three years. When it nears expiry, you can apply for a subsequent permit if you still meet the conditions, so many people maintain their stay through a series of single permits over the years.
