A non-EU national legally living in Italy with a valid residence permit of at least one year can sponsor eligible family members.
To bring family members to Italy through ricongiungimento familiare, the sponsor must already be lawfully resident in Italy with a residence permit valid for at least one year. Qualifying permit types generally include work, self-employment, study, family, religious purposes, scientific research, and international or subsidiary protection.
The sponsor is the person who proves the income and housing conditions and lodges the request for authorisation (nulla osta) before the relatives apply for their visas. Holding a stable, valid permit is therefore the foundation of any family reunification application.
