The permit is valid for the length of your contract up to a maximum of five years, and after five years of lawful residence you can apply for a permanent residence permit.
The Highly Skilled Migrant permit is a temporary regular residence permit issued for the duration of your employment contract, up to a maximum of five years.
After five years of continuous lawful residence you can apply for a permanent residence permit, provided you continue to meet the relevant conditions. This makes the route a recognised long-term path, but keep your permit valid throughout and avoid long gaps in employment that could interrupt your qualifying residence.
