
You generally must have lived in Australia for 4 years on a valid visa, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident, before you apply.
The general residence requirement is that you have been living in Australia on a valid visa for the 4 years immediately before you apply, and have held a permanent visa (or a Special Category subclass 444 visa) for the last 12 months of that period.
There are also limits on absences: you generally must not have been outside Australia for more than 12 months in total during the 4 years, and not more than 90 days in the 12 months immediately before applying. The Department's Residence Calculator can help you check whether you meet these rules.
