F-1 students may be authorized up to 12 months of post-completion OPT, and those with a qualifying STEM degree from an SEVP-certified school may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension.
After completing a degree program, USCIS may authorize an F-1 student up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training for employment directly related to the field of study. This is the standard OPT period available at each higher education level.
Students who earned a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field from an accredited, SEVP-certified school may apply for a 24-month extension before their current OPT expires. If you file the STEM OPT extension on time and your OPT expires while it is pending, your work authorization is automatically extended for up to 180 days while USCIS adjudicates the application. The STEM extension has additional employer and reporting requirements.
