The main routes are the Residence Permit for Employment Purposes, the EU Blue Card for highly qualified roles, the specialised Hungarian Card, and the White Card for digital nomads.
Non-EU nationals generally need a combined work-and-residence permit. The Residence Permit for Employment Purposes is Hungary's standard single permit, but under the current rules it is capped and, for non-graduate roles, limited to nationals of designated countries. Highly qualified workers can use the EU Blue Card, which is open regardless of nationality. The Hungarian Card covers specific professional groups, and the White Card lets digital nomads live in Hungary while working remotely for a foreign employer — though White Card holders cannot work for Hungarian companies and the permit does not lead to permanent residence. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a permit.
