Validity is generally tied to your contract: permanent contracts typically receive a two-year permit, while fixed-term contracts are aligned to the contract length plus a short buffer.
The duration of your Blue Card depends on the type of employment contract. With a permanent contract, the permit is usually issued for around two years and can be renewed. With a temporary or fixed-term contract, the permit is generally granted for the length of the contract plus a short additional period.
When the permit nears expiry you apply to renew it, provided you still meet the qualification, salary, and contract conditions. Keeping your employment and salary at the required level throughout is what allows you to renew and to build towards longer-term residence.
