Long-Term Residence — EU is the permanent-residence status available to non-EU nationals after five years of continuous, uninterrupted lawful residence in Austria. Alongside that residence requirement you'll need to show stable and regular resources, all-risks health insurance and a valid travel document.
The step that needs planning ahead is integration. Before you can apply, you must complete Module 2 of the Integration Agreement, which raises the German-language and integration bar beyond the basic level required for, say, family reunification. Once granted, the status gives near-equal treatment with Austrian nationals and the right to move to other EU states under certain conditions.
It's worth separating this from citizenship, which is a longer road. Austrian citizenship generally requires ten years of lawful, continuous residence — at least five of them holding a residence permit — plus stable income, proof of German and a citizenship test, and Austria is restrictive about dual citizenship.
Rules and integration requirements are periodically updated, so confirm the current details with the official Austrian portals before you apply.
