The D4 is Portugal's residency visa for study and research — for higher or secondary education, doctoral or post-doctoral research, internships or volunteer work at a recognised institution for more than a year.
The D4 visa is for non-EU nationals coming to Portugal for education or research lasting more than a year. It covers higher education, secondary education, doctoral and post-doctoral research, internships and volunteer work at a recognised institution.
The starting point is an acceptance or admission letter from a recognised Portuguese institution. You will generally also need proof of sufficient financial resources for the stay — though there are exemptions for some higher-education and research applicants — together with proof of accommodation in Portugal, a valid passport, a criminal record certificate and insurance. You apply for the visa at a consulate or VFS, then apply for the residence permit with AIMA after arrival, with the visa decision due within around 60 days.
If you plan to stay on after your studies or research, it helps to think ahead about moving onto a work route. ACME can help you understand the financial evidence expected and plan that transition, and we recommend confirming the current requirements on vistos.mne.gov.pt before applying.
