You generally need five years of continuous, legal residence in Spain immediately before applying for long-term residence.
Spain's long-term residence (residencia de larga duracion) requires five consecutive years of legal residence in Spain immediately preceding the application. Your residence permits must have been valid throughout, without gaps.
The five-year period must be continuous: periods of irregular stay can break the count and force you to start again. Maintaining renewed permits on time over the full period is therefore critical to qualifying.
