L-1A managers and executives can stay up to 7 years; L-1B specialized-knowledge workers up to 5 years. New-office petitions are first approved for only 1 year.
The maximum L-1 stay depends on your category. L-1A executives and managers may extend in two-year increments up to a total of seven years. L-1B specialized-knowledge employees may extend up to a total of five years.
If you are coming to open or staff a brand-new U.S. office, the initial petition is approved for only one year. After that first year, you must show the new office is operational and meets the requirements to extend.
Once you reach the maximum, you generally must spend time outside the United States before becoming eligible for L-1 again, though time may be recaptured in some cases.
