It is a document confirming Polish heritage for eligible people of Polish descent. It is not a residence permit but gives a fast track to permanent residence and later to Polish citizenship.
The Karta Polaka (Pole's Card) confirms a person's affiliation with the Polish nation and is issued to people of Polish descent from certain countries. It does not by itself grant the right to live or work in Poland, but it carries significant advantages: a holder can apply for a permanent residence permit on arrival without the usual waiting period, may work without a separate work permit, and after a period of residence on that permanent residence permit can apply for recognition as a Polish citizen. The Karta Polaka is surrendered when the permanent residence card is issued.
