Most third-country nationals must have lived in Slovenia legally and continuously for at least five years before applying for a permanent residence permit.
The standard rule is five years of uninterrupted, lawful residence in Slovenia on the basis of a temporary residence permit (or a valid application to extend one). Time spent in the country must be genuine residence, not just visits.
There is an important exception: family members of a Slovenian citizen, and family members of a foreigner who already holds a permanent residence permit, may qualify after only two years of continuous lawful residence rather than five. Always confirm which timeline applies to your situation before filing.
