The specialist permit is Finland's fast-track route for highly skilled non-EU experts — often IT professionals and engineers — who hold a confirmed specialist job. There is no labour-market test, and most applicants get a decision in about two weeks.
The Residence Permit for a Specialist (erityisasiantuntija) is aimed at non-EU professionals with a higher-education degree, or demonstrated special expertise, and a confirmed job in a role that genuinely requires that expertise. Your gross monthly salary needs to be at or above the published specialist threshold, and you simply need a valid passport alongside your job offer. Because no availability consideration (labour-market test) applies, this is one of the smoothest work routes Finland offers.
Processing is quick: the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) targets a decision in roughly two weeks for most specialist cases, with a legal maximum of two months. Applying online through Enter Finland and requesting a D visa at the same time lets you travel as soon as the decision is made, rather than waiting for the physical card. The first electronic permit fee is EUR 530.
The specialist permit and the EU Blue Card share the same salary threshold, so if you might later want to work elsewhere in the EU, the Blue Card may suit you better — otherwise the specialist permit is functionally simpler for staying in Finland. Salary thresholds and fees are updated periodically, so confirm the current figures on migri.fi before you apply. If you are weighing the two routes, an ACME consultant can help you map your situation to the better fit.
