Non-EU nationals who have legally resided in Italy for the required period — generally ten years — may apply for citizenship by naturalisation. The Prefecture of residence assesses the application and forwards it to the Ministry of the Interior, with citizenship granted by Presidential Decree.
Citizenship by naturalisation is the residence-based route to Italian nationality. For most non-EU nationals it requires ten years of continuous lawful residence in Italy, though shorter periods apply for refugees, stateless people and certain descendants of Italians, and a separate procedure exists for spouses of Italian citizens. You also need adequate income to support yourself, no disqualifying criminal record, and no threat to public order.
The application is submitted to the Prefecture of your province of residence, which assesses it and forwards it to the Ministry of the Interior; citizenship is ultimately granted by Presidential Decree. Because of the long residence requirement, naturalisation typically follows several years on a work or family permit and often a period of EU long-term residence.
Residence calculations and conditions can change, so confirm the current rules on the official portal before applying. ACME can review your residence history, work out when you become eligible, and help prepare a complete naturalisation application.
