An O-1 is approved for up to 3 years initially, then extended in 1-year increments for as long as the qualifying work or event continues.
The initial O-1 period is set to cover the time needed for the event, project, or activity, up to a maximum of three years.
After the initial period, you can request extensions in increments of up to one year at a time to continue or complete the same event or activity for which you were admitted.
There is no fixed lifetime maximum the way there is for H-1B or L-1, so O-1 status can continue as long as you keep qualifying and there is ongoing qualifying work to support each petition.
