Asylum claimants are not automatically allowed to work the moment they make a claim. To get a work permit, your claim must first be found eligible to be referred to the IRB.

You also need to complete other steps, including giving biometrics and passing an Immigration Medical Examination. Once those are done, a work permit can be issued, allowing you to support yourself while you wait for your hearing and decision.
