The student permit is for non-EU students accepted onto a Finnish degree or qualification programme, issued for the duration of studies for degree students. You may work on average 30 hours a week, and a post-study permit gives up to two years to find work.
The Student Residence Permit (Opiskelija) is for non-EU students who have confirmed acceptance from a Finnish educational institution onto studies that are primarily in-person and lead to a degree or qualification. You will need to prove financial means — a minimum monthly amount, with funds in your account at the time of application — and hold valid health insurance. For degree students, the permit covers the whole duration of the programme.
Finland is notably welcoming to students after graduation. During studies you can work on average 30 hours per week, which helps with living costs, and once you finish, a post-study permit allows up to two years to look for work or start a business — a genuine path toward staying on. Processing for the student permit is about a month for most cases, with a three-month legal maximum, and the first electronic adult permit fee is EUR 600 (EUR 400 for minors).
Financial-means amounts and fees are reviewed periodically, so check the current figures on migri.fi before applying. If you are planning to study in Finland with the longer goal of working there afterward, ACME can help you think through the full study-to-work journey.
