Start from your purpose and profile. A skilled job plus a master's and a qualifying salary points to a Talent card; a job that doesn't meet the thresholds points to the standard work permit; living off independent means without working points to the visitor visa.
The simplest way to choose is to match your purpose to the route. If you are coming to work and have a master's-level degree with a qualifying salary, a Talent card (qualified employee, EU Blue Card or another sub-category) is usually the strongest option — it skips the labour-market test and gives your family a Talent — famille card with work rights. If your job offer does not meet the Talent thresholds, the standard employee work permit applies, but your employer will need work authorisation and a labour-market test.
For other purposes: students use the Etudiant permit, often via Campus France, with a one-year post-study job-search option afterward; founders, innovators and investors fit specific Talent sub-categories; and people of independent means who do not intend to work use the Visitor long-stay visa, which strictly bars employment. Families of residents can come through standard family reunification when the Talent — famille route does not apply.
Longer term, five years of continuous residence can lead to the EU long-term resident card, and naturalisation is generally possible after five years (with rising language requirements). Because thresholds and rules change, confirm the current details on france-visas.gouv.fr and service-public.gouv.fr — and a short ACME consultation can help you settle on the route that best fits your profile.
