If you qualify through real estate investment fund shares, you must hold them for at least five years, and you must still hold the investment to extend the permit on that basis.
The fund-share route is built around a genuine, multi-year commitment. You are required to hold the qualifying investment fund shares for a minimum of five years rather than selling them shortly after the permit is granted.
This matters at renewal time: an extension based on fund shares is only available if you still hold the investment. By contrast, where the permit was granted on the basis of the EUR 1,000,000 educational donation, an extension can be granted without making a further investment, because the donation is a one-time act.
