You apply online via MyGuichet.lu or by post to the General Department of Immigration; the ministry must respond within a maximum of 6 months, and a receipt can serve as temporary authorisation in Luxembourg if your previous permit expires during processing.
Applications for long-term resident status are submitted either online through MyGuichet.lu or by post to the General Department of Immigration at the Ministry of Home Affairs. You will need to provide a passport copy, proof of resources such as employment contracts or tax returns covering the period, housing proof, a social security affiliation certificate, a health insurance certificate, a criminal record extract, and the EUR 80 fee.
The ministry has a maximum of six months to decide. If your existing permit expires while the application is being processed, the receipt issued can serve as temporary authorisation, but only within Luxembourg and not for international travel. Renewals of the long-term permit are filed two months before expiry. Submitting a complete file up front is the best way to avoid the process stretching toward the full six months.
