Because the eTA is tied to a specific passport, you must apply for a new eTA when you get a new passport, even if the old eTA hasn't reached five years.
An eTA is electronically attached to the exact passport you used when applying. It is valid for five years or until that passport expires, whichever comes first, so a new passport means your old eTA no longer applies.
When you renew or replace your passport, apply for a fresh eTA using the new passport details and travel on that same passport. A frequent mistake is travelling on a different passport than the one linked to the eTA, which can prevent you from boarding your flight.
