The national (D) visa is the long-stay visa that visa-required third-country nationals need to enter Switzerland for stays over 90 days, issued by the Swiss representation abroad only after the underlying residence or work permit has been approved by the canton and SEM.
The national (D) visa is the long-stay visa that visa-required non-EU/EFTA nationals need to enter Switzerland for stays of more than 90 days — for work, study, family reunification or other long-term residence. It is not a standalone route but the entry document that follows an approved permit.
The sequence matters: the underlying residence or work permit must first be approved by the canton and SEM. Then, the cantonal immigration authority authorises the relevant Swiss representation abroad to issue the visa. You will need a valid travel document issued within the last 10 years and must lodge the application at the competent Swiss representation abroad. SEM itself does not issue visas.
Because the D visa depends entirely on the underlying permit being approved first, planning the two steps together is essential. Procedures vary by canton and change over time, so confirm the current requirements with the relevant Swiss representation and cantonal authority — and ACME can help you sequence the permit and entry-visa steps correctly.
