Your permit is tied to your studies, so abandoning, failing or significantly changing your programme can lead to the permit being withdrawn because the purpose of your stay no longer exists.
The student residence permit is granted specifically so you can pursue a particular course of study. If you stop studying, are removed from your programme, or the original purpose of your stay no longer applies, the legal basis for the permit falls away and it can be withdrawn.
Switching to a completely different programme or institution can also count as a change in the purpose of your stay. If your study plans change, you should not assume your existing permit still covers you. Instead, report the change and find out whether you need to apply for a new permit on the correct basis.
