Do I have to live in Canada to sponsor my parents or grandparents?

To sponsor parents or grandparents, you generally must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person registered under the Canadian Indian Act, and you must be residing in Canada.

This residency expectation is stricter than some other categories. Because PGP involves a long 20-year undertaking and a three-year income test based on Canadian tax filings, IRCC expects sponsors to be established and living in Canada when they apply and when the parents or grandparents arrive.
