Can I change employers while on an H-1B visa?

The H-1B is tied to a specific employer, but you are not locked in for the whole period. A new employer can file a fresh H-1B petition for you.

Under H-1B portability rules, if you are in valid H-1B status, you may begin working for the new employer once the new, non-frivolous petition is properly filed, rather than having to wait for approval.

Keep in mind the new employer must obtain a certified Labor Condition Application and file Form I-129. If the new petition is ultimately denied, your authorization to work for that employer ends.
