The D4 visa itself is a short-validity entry visa (about four months). After you arrive in Portugal you must apply to AIMA for a residence permit, which is what lets you stay for the duration of your studies.
The visa you receive from the consulate is an entry document that lets you travel to Portugal and present yourself to the immigration authority. It is valid for a limited window and usually allows more than one entry.
Once in Portugal you book an appointment with AIMA (the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum) to convert the visa into a residence permit. That permit is normally issued for one year and is renewable for as long as your course continues, so most students renew it each academic year until they finish.
