The sponsor first requests reunification from AIMA in Portugal; once that is approved, the family members apply for their residency visas at a Portuguese consular post abroad.
Reunification is a two-stage process. It begins inside Portugal, where the resident sponsor lodges the reunification request with AIMA, supported by proof of the relationship, accommodation and means of support.
After AIMA approves the concession, the relevant family members go to the Portuguese consulate covering their place of residence to apply for the residency visa that lets them travel to Portugal. On arrival they complete the residence-permit step. Doing the steps in the right order avoids consulates rejecting applications that lack the prior AIMA approval.
