You can travel, but to return you must have a valid entry document (visitor visa or eTA); the visitor record does not replace it.
Travelling outside Canada while on a visitor record is allowed, but the visitor record itself does not let you back in. To re-enter, you need a valid entry document appropriate to your nationality, such as a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
If you travel outside Canada or the United States, confirm your entry document is still valid before you go. A border services officer always makes the final decision on entry at the port of entry.
