The process begins in Italy, not abroad. As the sponsor, you submit an application for authorisation (nulla osta al ricongiungimento) to the immigration single desk (Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione), uploading proof of your status, income, housing, and family relationships.

Once the nulla osta is approved, it is sent to the relevant Italian consulate, and your family member then applies there for an entry visa. After arriving in Italy, the relative applies for their own residence permit. Keeping each stage in the correct order and meeting deadlines is important to avoid delays.
