ILR lets you live, work and study in the UK without time limit, but it can lapse; citizenship gives you a British passport and cannot lapse through absence.
Indefinite leave to remain gives you the right to live, work and study in the UK for as long as you like and to apply for benefits if eligible. However, it can lapse if you spend 2 or more years outside the UK, and it does not give you a British passport or the right to vote in all elections.
British citizenship is the next step beyond ILR. It gives you a UK passport, cannot be lost simply by living abroad, and is usually applied for after holding ILR (often for at least 12 months). Many people get ILR first and then naturalise as British citizens later.
