To get the longer subclass 155 facility you generally need to have been lawfully in Australia as a permanent resident or citizen for at least two of the last five years.
The most common way to qualify for a five-year subclass 155 Resident Return visa is the two-in-five residence rule. This means being lawfully present in Australia for a total of at least two years out of the five years immediately before you apply.
Those years must have been spent as a permanent resident or Australian citizen. Meeting this rule is what unlocks the longer travel facility, allowing you to come and go freely over the following five years.
