You generally need five years of continuous legal residence in Poland directly before applying, with limited absences allowed without breaking continuity.
The EU Long-Term Resident permit rewards sustained settlement in Poland. The standard requirement is five years of uninterrupted legal residence counted back from the date you apply.
Continuity is assessed with some flexibility: short trips abroad are permitted, generally up to a defined length per absence and a capped total across the five years. Certain categories, such as Blue Card holders, may benefit from more generous absence rules and can sometimes count legal residence in other EU states. Because the counting rules are detailed, keep a clear record of any time spent outside Poland.
