It depends on the sponsor's category. Employees must meet a maintenance and housing requirement; researchers and EU Blue Card holders are generally exempt; self-employed sponsors must show specific savings.
The financial test varies by who is sponsoring. If the sponsor is an employee, there is a maintenance and housing requirement: the household must have enough income after rent to cover normal living costs. The 2025 reference amounts after housing costs are around SEK 6,243 for a single adult, SEK 10,314 for a cohabiting couple, and SEK 3,336 to SEK 5,339 per child.
Researchers and EU Blue Card holders are generally not subject to the maintenance requirement. Self-employed sponsors must instead show savings, for example SEK 200,000 for themselves, SEK 100,000 for a spouse and SEK 50,000 per child, covering the full permit period. Reference amounts change yearly, so verify the current figures.
