The standard requirement is five years of habitual residence in France, but this can be reduced to two years or waived entirely in certain cases.
The general rule for naturalisation by decree is that you must have lived in France habitually for at least five years (the 'stage'). Your residence must be regular and stable, and France must be the centre of your material and family interests.
The period drops to two years if, for example, you completed at least two years of higher education at a French institution, or you can render or have rendered important services to France. It can be waived completely for certain groups, such as recognised refugees, nationals of French-speaking countries in some situations, and those with long French-language schooling.
