Losing your job ends the work authorization tied to that employer, but a grace period gives you time to find a new H-1B sponsor, change status, or depart.
Your H-1B status is employer-specific, so a layoff or termination means you can no longer work for that sponsor. However, you are not required to leave the country the same day.
The regulations provide a discretionary grace period of up to 60 days (or until your current I-94 expiry, whichever is shorter) after the end of employment. During that window you can look for a new employer to file an H-1B petition, change to another status, or prepare to depart.
Because this period is short and not guaranteed, it is wise to act quickly and confirm your specific timeline with a qualified advisor.
